# Western Odisha Unites in Gratitude as Millions Celebrate Nuakhai, Offer ‘Nabanna’ to Maa Samaleswari

Jharsuguda- Western Odisha came alive with vibrant celebrations today as the region marked Nuakhai, its most important agricultural festival, offering the season's first harvest to the reigning deity, Maa Samaleswari, while celebrating renewed social bonds. The annual festival, which takes place on the Panchami tithi (fifth day) of the lunar fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada, saw millions of families across districts like Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Jharsuguda gather together in a grand display of cultural heritage.

The core ritual began in the morning with the offering of Nabanna the newly harvested rice crop cooked with milk and sugar to Maa Samaleswari at her historic temple in Sambalpur. Following the central offering, households across the region offered the new crop to their respective presiding deities and family gods.

Following the rituals, the region transitioned into the highly anticipated *Nuakhai Juhar*. A cornerstone of the festival, this tradition involves younger family and community members seeking the blessings of their elders.

- **Strengthening relationships:** The custom serves to mend broken ties, forgive past differences, and renew community solidarity.

- **Traditional attire:** Locals donned traditional Sambalpuri handloom attire, turning towns and villages into a sea of colorful, intricate patterns.

- **Festive feasts:** Families gathered to consume the blessed *Nabanna* together, accompanied by traditional delicacies like *Manda Pitha*.

As the day progressed, the festive energy moved to community grounds. The air resonated with the beats of traditional instruments like the *Dhol*, *Nishan*, and *Tasa*, accompanying energetic folk dances including *Sambalpuri*, *Dalkhai*, and *Rasarkeli*. Leaders, dignitaries, and people from all walks of life extended their warm greetings, highlighting Nuakhai as a beautiful symbol of gratitude towards nature and the tireless efforts of the farming community.
