CRITICAL SPACE CRUNCH: Stray Cattle Flood Jharsuguda Roads as 60% of Grazing Lands Vanish

JHARSUGUDA — The menace of stray cattle on the streets of Jharsuguda has reached a tipping point in 2026, exposing a severe crisis driven by rapid development, systemic encroachment, and collective public neglect.
Once a rare sight, cattle roaming major thoroughfares have now become a daily hazard for commuters across the district’s three municipalities and five blocks. Local experts and residents point out that the blame lies equally with negligent cattle owners and a community that has turned a blind eye to the root cause of the issue: the systematic destruction of natural habitats.
Estimates indicate that only about 40% of the district’s original grazing land remains intact today.
Rapid industrialization and urban expansion have led to massive deforestation, stripping animals of their natural foraging grounds.
The missing 60% of gochar land has been swallowed up by Private individuals have unlawfully seized designated pastures for residential, commercial, or agricultural use and Large parcels of land have been repurposed for public infrastructure and industries state-led development projects.
Everyone complains about traffic hazards and accidents caused by stray cattle, but no one asks why they are on the asphalt in the first place,” said a local resident. “We destroyed their homes in the name of progress. If the very land meant to sustain these animals is gone, they have nowhere left to go but the streets.
As urban boundaries continue to expand across Jharsuguda, the lack of designated rehabilitation spaces or cattle colonies ensures that the roads will remain the default sanctuary for displaced livestock, posing ongoing risks to both human lives and animal welfare. some activists are now calling on the district administration to audit remaining gochar lands and evict illegal encroachers before the urban ecosystem collapses further.
